What is a sworn translation in Spanish?
A sworn translation (traducción jurada) is a translation into Spanish signed and sealed by a sworn translator appointed by Spain's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MAEC). It is official and valid in Spain without further legalisation. Extranjería, the Registro Civil and consulates ask for it when your document is not in Spanish.
Sworn translators are appointed by the MAEC through its Office of Language Interpretation (OIL). The rules are set by Real Decreto 724/2020. Each translator has a personal number shown on their seal.
In Spain, when an office asks for an official or "certified" translation, it means a sworn translation (traducción jurada) by a MAEC-appointed translator. A certified translation made outside Spain, for example by a UK or US translator, is not a sworn translation. Most Spanish offices won't accept it. Read sworn vs certified translation if you are unsure which one you need.
Since 8 March 2025, a digitally signed sworn translation is legally valid in Spain, under Orden AUC/213/2025. More detail is in our guide to digitally signed sworn translations.

How do I order a sworn Spanish translation online?
You order a sworn Spanish translation online by uploading a scan or photo of every page, including the apostille. Before paying, you receive a fixed price and a delivery date. You approve a draft, then receive a digitally signed PDF. Originals are never needed.
- Send a scan or photo. Include every page and the apostille. A clear phone photo is enough.
- Get a fixed total price. You see the total and the delivery date before you pay anything.
- Check a draft. You confirm names, dates and places before the translator applies the seal.
- Receive your translation. You get a digitally signed PDF. If an office insists on paper, we send it by courier.
| Document | Turnaround |
|---|---|
| 1-page certificate (birth, marriage, police, degree) | 24–48 hours |
| 2–5 pages, such as a short transcript | 2–3 working days |
| 6–10 pages | 3–5 working days |
| More than 10 pages, such as a full syllabus | Custom deadline confirmed with the quote |
| Rare languages (Chinese, Russian, Ukrainian, Arabic) | 3–4 working days for 1–2 pages; 5–7 for 3–10 pages |
| Same-day (1–2 page certificates, common languages) | Delivered by 20:00 if received and paid by 12:00 noon Spanish time (CET/CEST) on a working day |
Same-day delivery costs +60% (minimum €25 extra); 24-hour delivery costs +30%. We accept urgent orders on Saturdays. Standard weekend orders start on the next working day.
Got a requerimiento? You have 10 working days (días hábiles) to answer under Ley 39/2015, art. 68. Our correction notice sworn translation page explains how we prioritise it. For other close deadlines, see the urgent sworn translation service. The full process is on how it works.
How much does a Spanish sworn translation cost online?
Sworn translators in Spain set their fees freely; there is no official tariff under RD 724/2020. As an indicative market range, sworn translations in Spain cost about €30–120 a page. That is roughly €30–80 for the first page and €15–40 for later pages (Cronoshare, January 2026). This is a market range, not our price. Our certificates start from €29 per certificate in common languages.
| Source language | Starting price |
|---|---|
| English, French, Italian, Portuguese, German | from €29 per certificate |
| Arabic, Russian, Ukrainian, Romanian | from €39 per certificate |
| Chinese, Urdu, Hindi, Bengali and other rare languages | from €49 per certificate |
The quoted total includes the translation of the apostille, the draft check and the signed PDF. Courier within Spain costs €9 only if an office insists on paper.
These are starting prices. For your final price, send your details through the quote form. We email you a written quotation, and work starts only after you approve it. You can see our fixed prices for each document, or get a fixed quote for your certificates in a few minutes.
Will Spanish authorities accept our translations?
A translation signed and sealed by a MAEC-appointed sworn translator is official and valid in Spain without further legalisation. Extranjería's information sheets ask for a translation "por un traductor jurado". The Registro Civil and Spanish consulates accept the same sworn translation.
Rejections often have nothing to do with the translation itself. Common causes are a missing apostille, an expired certificate or a name that does not match the passport. That is why we check three things before delivery:
- Apostille or legalisation present. If it is missing, we tell you before you pay.
- Names match the passport. Where spellings differ, the translator adds a note.
- Every page is translated and sealed. Including the apostille and any stamps on the back.
Is the translator real, and what if an office says no?
Before you send a birth certificate to Extranjería or the Registro Civil, four checks are worth making.
- Is the translator real? Every sworn translator (traductor jurado) we work with is appointed by the MAEC and listed on its register. Each page of your translation carries their official seal and signature. You can check that seal against the official MAEC list, the Buscador-STIJ. Our guide shows how to verify a Spanish sworn translator. See also the credentials of the sworn translators we work with.
- What if the office rejects it? Say a Registro Civil clerk finds a misspelt place of birth: you get a free, prioritised re-issue if rejected on formal grounds. Read how a free re-issue works.
- Is my data safe? Files are deleted within 7 days of delivery, as set out in our privacy policy.
- Is your cita or deadline soon? Our same-day and 24-hour sworn translation options are built for that.

Where should I start: my procedure, my country or my document?
Start with the procedure you are applying for, because it decides which documents need a sworn translation. If you already know the document or its country, go straight there. Each page lists what to send, the apostille route and the turnaround.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a sworn Spanish translator near me?
You do not need one in your town. A sworn translator in Spain can work from your scan wherever you live, in Madrid or abroad. You receive the signed PDF by email, and paper by courier only if an office insists.
Can I get a sworn translation without visiting an office?
Yes. You upload a scan or photo of every page, including the apostille, and we never need your originals. You check a draft of names and dates, then receive a digitally signed PDF by email.
Can a traductor jurado online sign a translation valid in Spain?
Yes. Since 8 March 2025, a sworn translation signed with a qualified electronic certificate is legally valid in Spain. A paper translation with a handwritten signature also remains valid.
Can I get a sworn translation done in India?
No, not an official one. The Spanish Embassy in New Delhi states that official sworn translations cannot be done in India. Ordering online from a MAEC-appointed translator is the normal route.
Do I need to send my original documents?
No. A clear scan or phone photo of every page is enough, including the apostille and any stamps on the back. You then submit the translation together with your original document.
Do you translate from Spanish into other languages?
No. We translate into Spanish only. We do not offer Spanish-to-English translation. Our translations are for Spanish authorities such as Extranjería, the Registro Civil and consulates. For British use of a Spanish document, read does the UK accept a Spanish sworn translation.
